Meet the Maker

Jamil — The Artisan Behind The Leather Culture

My journey with leather started in a rather simple way — by buying leather products myself.

As a young undergraduate student, I believed what I saw on the labels: “Genuine Leather” and “Real Leather.” Like most students, I was working with a limited budget, so finding a genuine leather belt for under $40 felt like a great deal.

But after only a few months of daily use, the belt began to crack and show significant signs of wear. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. I was a student, and I simply assumed that was how long a leather belt was supposed to last.

Then came my first job interview.

I wanted to look professional, so I increased my budget and purchased another “genuine leather” belt — this time from a well-known brand that gave me confidence I was buying something of better quality. Unfortunately, after a few months of wearing it five days a week, the same thing happened. The leather began cracking and wearing out.

I found myself buying a new belt every six to eight months.

That’s when I started asking myself: Is this really how long a leather belt is supposed to last?

Discovering Full-Grain Leather

Eventually, I came across the term Full-Grain Leather.

It immediately caught my attention. What made full-grain leather different from what I had been buying? Why did some leather products last for years while others seemed to deteriorate so quickly?

My curiosity grew into a genuine passion.

I began visiting my local leather market, exploring different types and grades of leather, speaking with leather artisans, and learning how leather products are designed and crafted. The more I learned, the more fascinated I became with the craft.

What started as curiosity slowly became a business.

I began selling leather products locally through social media and marketplaces. As demand grew, I started building relationships with leather suppliers and exploring hides from respected tanneries in North America and Italy. Eventually, I opened my Etsy shop, where the response to my handmade products encouraged me to take the next step.

From Passion to The Leather Culture

With the support of my wonderful wife and our lovely son, I decided to pursue leathercraft as more than just a side business.

Today, The Leather Culture has grown into a working leather workshop, where our family is involved in building something we are truly proud of. Every belt and dog collar is handmade in our workshop with care, attention to detail, and a focus on using quality leather.

My goal has always been simple:

I want everyone to have the opportunity to own a genuine full-grain leather belt without having to spend a fortune.

I believe quality craftsmanship should be accessible. That’s why I work to keep our prices fair while producing our products in small batches. We focus on making products that are built to be worn, used, and enjoyed for years — not replaced every few months.

From a student buying his first inexpensive leather belt to becoming a leather artisan, this journey has taught me that sometimes the things we buy can lead us to discover what we are truly passionate about.

Thank you for being part of that journey and for supporting a small Canadian workshop.
